1962-1966 (The Red Album) – The Beatles – 1973 Claimed Sales: 15m First listen?: Yes (this collection at least) Format Listened?: Apple Music Beatles compilations are a funny thing. During the heyday of Beatlemania there were countless official, unofficial and seemingly random compilations for various territories across the world. Of course this kept the focus purely on … Continue reading

Simon & Garfunkel’s Greatest Hits – Simon & Garfunkel – 1972 Claimed Sales: 13m First listen?: No Format Listened?: Vinyl/Apple Music Sometimes it doesn’t take a lot to understand why an artist is massively successful. Taking elements of folk music and making it relevant for an audience experiencing the swinging 60s made Paul Simon one of the era’s defining … Continue reading

The World’s Greatest Hits: The Beatles (The White Album) – The Beatles

The Beatles (The White Album)  – The Beatles – 1968 Claimed Sales: 19m First listen?: Yes Format Listened?: Apple Music The White Album is a daunting prospect for a new listener. Thirty songs split over two records that last over 90 minutes when combined, it’s certainly a far cry from the conciseness of their previous album Sgt … Continue reading

The World’s Greatest Hits: Rubber Soul – The Beatles

Rubber Soul marks the true turning point in the career of The Beatles. Fresh off a series of soundtrack albums for films starring the band, it’s the first true ‘album’ they released and all but changed the format for good. There’s certainly big hit-worthy singles on here, but it’s much more of a single body of work than anyone would have expected from the boys just two years after Beatlemania. Continue reading

Grammy Awards 2019: Nomination Predictions – Halftime Report

We are exactly 7 months into the eligibility period for the 2019 Grammy Awards which means it’s probably time to look at the early favourites for music’s biggest night. I’ve successfully posted one of these articles in each of the last 4 years with varying degrees of success, my prediction that the Frozen soundtrack would … Continue reading

Grammy Awards 2018: Who should win Album of the Year?

It’s the biggest award of the night and often becomes the most memorable moment of any Grammys telecast. Moments like Arcade Fire taking a surprise win here, or Adele’s reluctance to even accept the award over Beyonce last year have been some of the most memorable times for me. This year is one of the strongest sets of albums in recent memory, with not a single dud in sight. Could it be one of the tightest Album of the Year races in Grammy history? Let’s take a look at the nominees and then see just how deserving each of these albums are in depth. Continue reading

Grammy Awards 2018: Who deserves to win Song of the Year

It was always typical of the Grammy Awards that when considering the Record of the Year and Song of the Year contenders to draw similar conclusions between the near identical lists for the track categories. Every few years though we see two very different lists of songs in each category, ideally proving the difference between a big hit and a well written song. This year sees just one song appear in both categories, with two other artists submitted different tracks for Record than they did here. Only one can win on the night, will it be the same as I predicted for Record? Continue reading

Grammy Awards 2018: Who Should Win Record of the Year?

I made a promise to myself this year that I would finally return to an in depth look at the nominees of the big 4 categories, weighing up the chances that each nominee has and sharing more of my personal opinions on how deserving each would be of the trophy on the night. First up is Record of the Year which for the first time in nearly 4 decades sees no female act nominated. Continue reading
