UK Top 40 Recap 13th July 2014

william

Ariana Grande made her chart debut at the top spot last week with a little help from Iggy Azalea. Will Problem make it 2 weeks at #1?

In a week with few new entries we have Matrix & Futurebound with Don’t Look Back at number 38. The duo’s 4th top 40 hit, their 2013 single Control made it to number 7. Featured artist Tanya Lacey enters the UK chart for the second time, she made it to number 2 in 2011 on Loick Essien’s How We Roll. I Got U, the former number 1 from Duke Dumont also re-enters at 40 today.

Next up we have Classic from MKTO at number 24. Originally released last year it has become a big hit across the world. Stars of the Nickelodeon series Gigantic, MKTO take their names from members Malcolm Kelley and  Tony Oller. Also moving up the chart this week is Stolen Dance by Milky Chance which rises from 32 to 26.

Moving into the top 10 we have Jess Glynne with Right Here. The vocalist on two of 2014’s number 1’s, Rather Be and My Love, Right Here is the first chart entry for Glynne as a lead artist. Produced by Gorgon City at number 6 it gives her a third top 10 single for the year so far. Also moving into the top end of the chart are The Vamps with Somebody To You. With the album version appearing at the bottom end of the chart last week the song reaches as new peak with newly released remix featuring Demi Lovato. It reaches number 4 this week and becomes the 4th consecutive top 5 single for the boyband and the 6th top 40 UK hit for Lovato.

We have a new entry claiming the top spot, as last week’s number one Problem by Ariana Grande and Iggy Azalea  falls to number 2. Black Eyed Peas frontman and The Voice coach will.i.am is no stranger to the top spot, appearing at number 1 5 times as a solo artist and 5 times with Fergie and co. It’s My Birthday marks his 3rd chart topper as a lead solo artist, as featured artist Cody Wise makes his UK chart debut. Signed to will.i.am’s imprint of Interscope records, the US born Cody Wise made his performing debut as Young Simba in the Lion King on Broadway.

Predictions for next week:

Expect to see some big new entries next week, most notably Nicole Scherzinger with Your Love and Ella Eyre with I Will Go. I expect Nicole to make the top 10, but could see Ella just missing out with her first top 40 single as a lead act. Will.i.am and Ariana Grande will stick around near the top of the chart, but Rixton look like a safe bet for number 1 with Me and My Broken Heart. The song has already become a hit in the US, but the British band will be looking to have even more success in their home territory. Here’s my prediction for the top 5:

1) Rixton – Me and My Broken Heart
2) Ariana Grande – Problem (Feat. Iggy Azalea)
3) Will.i.am – It’s My Birthday (Feat. Cody Wise)
4) Ella Henderson – Ghost
5) Nicole Scherzinger – Your Love
