A Week In The Life…26/02/12

It’s been a few weeks since I’ve written a weekly roundup, with my Grammy articles taking precedence. Let’s get back on this.

TUNE of Right Now:  Dance (A$$) Remix (Feat. Nicki Minaj) – Big Sean

There are plenty of current tunes, such as Somebody That I Used To Know, Part of Me and Hot Right Now that would deserve a place here this week. In fact those would have made up the past 3 weeks I missed. Instead we have a song from last year I’ve finally discovered. Dance (A$$) is fully deserving of the TUNE label, the ‘Ass ass ass ass ass ass ass ass’ hook being just about as catchy as you can get. Throw in a MC Hammer sample, and Nicki’s best feature verse since Monster and this song is pure genius.

Album On Repeat: Reign of Terror – Sleigh Bells

I featured lead single Comeback Kid as my TUNE a few weeks ago, and this week Sleigh Bells’ second album was finally released. Reign of Terror is just as loud as Treats, but rather than being 30 minutes of pure adrenaline rush and constant riffs, the emphasis is on fully formed songs here. Opening intro True Shred Guitar dispels any warning of a drop in volume with extreme vigour, while on the flipside, End of The Line and You Lost Me see singer Alexis shine with her sweet vocal. It’s the sound of a group who showed great potential with a vicious and brash debut finding their feet in the music landscape, and experimenting with sounds most groups could only wish to use so effortlessly. It will most likely make it high up in my end of year list, and with this, Gotye and Lana Del Rey, 2012 is already looking like a strong year for albums.

Current Game of Choice:  SSX (Demo) – PS3

I would very much like to say I’ve been playing the full SSX this week, but instead I’ve had to settle for the 2 track demo. I say settle, as to be honest I would happily play this brief demo for the rest of the year, I just love me some SSX. Everything feels right with this entry in the series, Ubers are back to where they belong on the shoulder buttons and tricks are more ridiculous than ever. The lack of Elise in the demo was an oversight, she is my go to character in the series after all, but I’ve spent a fair few hours trying to score top points on both the Race and Freestyle tracks. 2nd March can’t come fast enough!
