Grammy Awards 2020: Who Should Win Record of the Year?

The Grammy awards are just days away, a combination of having no time and the mess that the Grammy Awards themselves seem to be having right now have cast doubts over whether I would ever get to write these articles. I’m going to actually try and be concise this year, if only as there’s literally hours to go before we find out just how many award predictions I am wrong about.

Record of the Year

Hey, Ma – Bon Iver
Bad Guy – Billie Eilish
7 Rings – Ariana Grande
Hard Place – H.E.R.
Talk – Khalid
Old Town Road – Lil Nas X featuring Billy Ray Cyrus
Truth Hurts – Lizzo
Sunflower – Post Malone & Swae Lee

As nomination predictions go I was pretty spot on with Record of the Year, the only big 4 category where I correctly predicted all but 2 of the nominated works. I was very surprised to see Bon Iver sneak into this category, who return to this category once again after the 2012 nominated Holocene. I do really like Hey, Ma though and it really sticks out among the massive pop hits here. The other unexpected inclusion is H.E.R. who features across multiple Big 4 categories for the second year in a row. I didn’t see a single person even mention Hard Place being in contention here, but it manages to also really stand out here. For me it doesn’t really become the massive record it feels like it’s about to become.

I think the winner is in the 6 nominees I got right though, massive hits from established acts like 7 Rings (The worst Ariana single in years) and Sunflower (The best Post Malone song until Circles), a massive radio hit from Khalid in Talk (His first properly great track) and three of the year’s biggest breakout songs, Old Town Road, Truth Hurts and Bad Guy. Record of the Year will go to one of those three songs, of that I am certain.

Old Town Road is the obvious favourite, not only the biggest song of the year breaking the all time record at the top of the Hot 100, but the best example of a song that captured pop culture in the last 12 months. I think perhaps there will be enough voters against Lil Nas X here though to push Lizzo or Billie into the top spot. My money would be on Bad Guy which manages to sound like absolutely no song has ever sounded before and yet sound like the perfect pop hit.

My Predictions

  1. Bad Guy
  2. Old Town Road
  3. Truth Hurts
  4. 7 Rings
  5. Hard Place
  6. Sunflower
  7. Talk
  8. Hey, Ma

My Picks

  1. Bad Guy
  2. Truth Hurts
  3. Old Town Road
  4. Talk
  5. Sunflower
  6. Hey, Ma
  7. 7 Rings
  8. Hard Place
